The following are Artist Level guideline definitions for Classical Singer audition listings. Definitions, as such, do not perfectly describe all singers but should be helpful for artists to determine their qualifications for a given audition notice.
It is still important for artists to observe these guidelines as performing companies continue to express their frustration at singers who send materials for audition listings for which they are not yet qualified.
Student: Currently enrolled in a university or conservatory music program.
Emerging Professional: Graduate of a college level vocal program or conservatory or in the last year has been in a Young Artist Program, Apprentice Program or performed in Workshop productions or No-Pay productions or equivalent. These artists occasionally have management.
Professional: In the last year has performed a principal role in a company with Opera America Budget Level level 3 or 4 or equivalent. Artists in this level are considered full-time professionals and the majority of their time spent and income are singing-related. Many of these artists have management.
Established Professional: In the last year has performed a principal role with an Opera America level 1 or 2 company or equivalent. Artists in this category are employed full-time singing principal roles with companies of any category in multiple venues domestic and international. These artists have management.
